Volunteer: Give it a Whirl! LogoVolunteer: Give it a Whirl!—April 27-May 3
Metro Area
Over 1500 volunteers came together to complete in one week, what it would take for three full-time staff to complete in one year!  With 35 agencies participating and nearly 100 projects, from painting, raking and landscaping, reading with children to sorting food, and from corporate groups to student organizations and families, the event allowed people to discover how many opportunities there are to get involved in our community, create lasting change and a better life for us all. This year’s event was a great success because of each and every volunteer.  All together, 1576 volunteers put in 6304 hours which served 40,173 people—that's a savings of $118,326 for the agencies!  Thank you and we hope to see you “give it a whirl” again next year!

Lend a Hand Hear the Band—April
Northrup Auditorium
United Way and the Minnesota Student Association partnered to host the second annual “Lend a Hand, Hear the Band” concert on April 10 at Northrop Auditorium. “Lend a Hand, Hear the Band” encourages University of Minnesota students to volunteer during the school year in the Minneapolis/St. Paul community. Students who complete at least 10 hours of community service are rewarded with a free concert. This year’s concert featured The Hold Steady, an up-and-coming alternative rock group originally from Minneapolis. Nearly 30,000 volunteer hours were completed, and despite some unseasonable weather about 600 students braved a storm to attend the concert.  Thank you for everyone who participated!

How did you spend your spring break?  Within six weeks United Way of America brought over 500 students from across the country together to make a difference in struggling communities.  Two of Greater Twin Cities United Way staff also participated as Team Leaders for the students.  From inner-city work in Detroit to disaster relief from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, teams of students gathered to rebuild, repair, remove debrie, collect information for grant assistance programs, map community progress and provide neighborhood beautification.  This was the third year United Way has partnered with sponsors MTV, FedEx, Deloitte and Cheap Tickets to engage and foster realtionships with students through meaningful volunteer experiences.
